Gabrielle Koster

Inspired by the strong roots that bind Holland and Indonesia, Mama Makan in Amsterdam brings us refreshing Indonesian flavors in food and drink that make a great start or end to your day. Think of a refreshing gado gado, Pajri Nenas or Sambal Goreng Tempeh, along with striking cocktails inspired by well-travelled spices, herbs and plants. They serve three rice table-versions and yes, one of them is vegan!

The Menu

Now, I’m a big fan of the Asian cuisine and when I was in Indonesia, I simply loved the food. You can understand why I had to try the vegan rice table at Mama Makan, right? Curious to see the menu? I’ve got you covered. You can find the vegan menu on the bottom of this blogpost. My favorite dishes? Lawar Kacang Panjang (green bean salad), Sambal Goreng Tempeh and the Gado Gado. But there was nothing I didn’t like. Mama Makan also offers a carefully chosen beer & wine pairing experience, matching their authentic and intense flavours. The dessert was the perfect way to end this tropical meal: passion fruit, mango sorbet and a coconut dessert. Yum!

The place itself

The restaurant is a perfect combination of tropical Indonesian accessories (I mean, those lamps!) and modern interior. Even the bathroom is worth paying a visit too, just because of the way it looks. The restaurant has a chic but very natural vibe and the staff is super friendly. The location is quite central, it’s near the Hyatt hotel and nearby tram and metro stops.

Dinner at Mama Makan makes for the perfect romantic evening, a night out with your vegan friends (or non-vegan friends, Mama Makan offers two other rice tables), a celebration or just a regular Friday night in town. Oh and about that menu? No worries, I didn’t forget about that. Here you go, the Vegan Rice Table.
